At Southside Traditional Goju Karate Club we practice the Okinawan Goju-ryu style of Karate. Goju-ryu translates as "hard-soft style", characteristic of very explosive and powerful movements with soft, whip like techniques. It is known around the world as one of the most effective traditional martial arts for its variety of practices. Major emphasis is given to breathing correctly in all of the kata but particularly in the Sanchin kata, which is one of the core kata of this style. Goju-ryu practice methods include body strengthening and conditioning, its basic approach to fighting (distance, stickiness, power generation), and partner drills. The style was founded by Master Chojun Miyagi, and he believed that "the ultimate aim of karate-do was to build character, conquer human misery, and find spiritual freedom".
All our dojos are governed by the International Okinawan Goju-ryu Karate-do Federation (IOGKF), with a membership of over 75,000 members from more than 60 different countries. IOGKF was founded in 1979 by Master Morio Higaonna. The current world chief instructor of IOGKF is Sensei Tetsuji Nakamura, who took over from Master Higaonna in 2012. In Australia, the IOGKF is represented by the Australian Okinawan Goju-ryu Karate-do Federation (AOGKF). The organisation is led country chief instructor Sensei Joe Roses, assisted by an executive committee who oversees the protection and teaching of our traditional art within Australia.
